Four Month Appointment and Swimming!

Yesterday we Tristan's four month appointment. We were so curious to see how much he has grown! At two months, his stats were 10.8 lbs (23%) and 23 inches (55%). Now, he has grown to 14.7 lbs (31%) and 26 inches (80%)! Long and lean! His head measurement is at the 55% so at least something is average :) The doc was very pleased with his development. Tristan LOVED the paper on the table that he had to lay on. He just kicked like crazy! Thought about buying some of that to bring home for him ;) Much cheaper than some other things! Tristan got an oral vaccine as well as two shots, one in each leg. The first didn't seem to phase him, but during the second, it seemed to hit what was happening, and he didn't like it at all! But, the crying/screaming didn't last long, thank goodness. He seemed very content when we got home. Played for a while and seemingly happy. Then...while was cooking dinner, I had him in there with me, he started to get whiny, but everytime I paid attention to him, he got very giddy and giggly. I picked him up and took him to the other room and he just got incredibly giggly -- more than I've seen before :) It was so funny. Then, he started giggling, crying, giggling, crying, back and forth. Finally, full-out cry. We weren't sure if it was just because he was tired or if it was because of the shots, so we decided to take a bath. We knew that if he enjoyed his bath, he was just tired. Sad to say, he just laid in the bathtub, not kicking or playing at all, so we came to the conclusion it was the shots :( He quickly went to bed, but today, he seems pretty much like normal :)

The other day, one of the camps left some kiddie pools, so we took one for Tristan. We filled it with water and had Tristan try it out. It was a little cold, so he didn't stay in too long. Next time, we will warm it up a little somehow :)

Here are some random pictures of Tristan:

Found this basket and thought a picture in it would be cute -- I was right! :)

Isn't he beautiful? Or handsome, I guess is the better way to ask it :)

When he first got in -- wasn't so sure!

Starting to enjoy it :)

There's a grin!

Nate's grandparents sent Tristan some birthday money, so we went out and bought Tristan something that someday he might really enjoy and keep him busy for longer periods of time! Right now, he's not so sure about it. It is a lot to take in! We found this at a consignment store, then saw the same thing at Babies R Us for twice the price, so we felt good about the consignment store price. We are frugal ;)

Four Months Old!

On July 5, Tristan turned four months old! Time is flying by so fast! He has really become a lot of fun lately -- with smiles, laughs, giggles, and learning all sorts of new things. Here are some facts about this past month:
* Have no idea how much he weighs -- appt is on the 14th.
* He is starting to outgrow his 0-3 months clothes and starting to wear his 3-6 month clothes! So many cute things to wear!
* When he wakes up in the morning and I go in there to get him, he smiles and giggles :)
* Dirty or wet diapers don't bother him one little bit.
* He has good nights and not-so-good nights. He hasn't slept 11 hours straight in quite a while, but we are hoping he will get back on track soon!
* He is starting to reach out to you if you hold your hands out to him to pick him up.
* He often wakes himself up from naps by rolling over onto his back :)
* Somehow he moves in circles around his crib while he sleeps.
* He has a strong personality -- loves to smile and laugh, but also can throw temper tantrums!
* He loves to be around people -- definitely a people person!

Four month picture with the bear -- I love his dimples!

When he peed in his bed and thought it was so funny...

Learning how to use the jumper!

Isn't he the cutest?!

Playing on his walker -- he has a short attention span at this point, so this didn't last too long :)

Yummers!

One of Nate's and my favorite dishes from China is clay pot rice. Absolutely wonderful. One of those dishes I could eat daily...and almost did (there is not too much variety where we lived -- it was either stir-fry, claypot rice, hot pot, noodles, or steamed dumplings). Clay pot rice is the one dish I've really missed. So, for my birthday, Nate ordered me two clay pot dishes :) I finally tried them out this week. I was really nervous because I had no idea how to do it, but it ended up being really easy. We didn't have all the Asia flavors (sesame oil, ginger, malt vinegar, etc...), but it turned out good with what we had. It even had the burnt rice crispies at the bottom which is Nate's favorite! However, I'm still trying to get the pots clean of the burnt pieces...

Looks good, doesn't it?!

Yum!

Our hot pads after setting the clay pots on them for just a few minutes. Someone mailed those to us in China -- good thing we aren't still there, or Nate would have had a fit (anything Texas was precious to us there :)!

Can't wait to try them out again!

Sports fanatic?

Nate and I were eating dinner the other night, and I look in the living room to check on Tristan, and this is how we found him. Slouching just like someone really into a sports game, huh?! Actually, we had Baby Einstein playing, which he was really into at that time!

Uncle Zach was visiting, and Tristan was in his bouncer playing with one of his toys, and Zach made the comment to Tristan about getting his foot caught...and less than a minute later, that is what happened :) But, smart boy, he was able to work his way out of it himself -- didn't even need his mom's help (it's already starting!).

Three Months Old!

Tristan is 3 months old, as of June 5! Time is going too quickly it seems. Can't believe it has already been three months. I'm really enjoying this new stage of his growing. He is so aware and curious about everything! He loves playing with his feet, and he often rolls to his side when he reaches for them. Guess he will be rolling over soon! He is also chewing on everything -- his fists, his blankets, his feet probably if he could get them in his mouth! He is sleeping great at night. 7:30-6:30ish, wakes up hungry, then until 8-9. I feel so blessed with such a good sleeper, although I never would have imagined that his first month or so of life! He is actually starting to take good naps as well, one in the morning and one in the afternoon -- 2-3 hours at a time -- as long as it is on the floor and on his tummy with his pacifier :) He is smiling more and more and even laughing some, which I love. He even greets me in the morning with a huge smile and lots of kicks! He also loves Baby Einstein videos because of the bright colors (and it helps Mom and Dad to have a quiet dinner :). I'm guessing he is around 12 1/2 lbs now, but we won't go to the doctor until July 14 for his 4 month checkup. He is still strictly breastfed, but I have a feeling that he is going to love solid foods once we introduce that :) One other blessing -- he has been so healthy since he was born -- no sickness at all!

He in his new swimming/outdoors hat. Gotta keep that bald head of his safe from the sun!

His three month picture with the bear. I can't tell a huge difference between his 2 month and three month picture, but his clothes are fitting better, so I know he is growing!

He still can't sit up very well... And please excuse the dirty diaper -- I just noticed that! He did get a change right after the pictures :) He is so embarrassed!

And then he tries to eat the bear :) I have the cutest video of this but my computer is too slow to download it :(

My baby boy sleeping...ahhh...

Fear

We all have something we fear. Some people fear flying, some people fear bugs, some people fear people! I have fears -- flying in small planes is one. But my greatest fear at this point in my life is something I didn't know you could fear. My fear is forgetting. Forgetting what I learned overseas, forgetting everything I saw and experienced, forgetting not to take anything for granted. I chuckle (not to be offensive) when people go on a week-long trip to some poor foreign country and they come back saying "I'll never take for granted anything again!" I mean, that's great, but after a few weeks or maybe even months, we start to forget that we experienced, what we saw. I lived in Asia, a poor part (not extreme poverty, just poor) for 17 months, never thinking I would forget, never thinking I would take anything for granted ever again, but sometimes I forget. In this western culture we live in, it is easy to forget.

I complain about a room being too hot or cold, and I have to remind myself that, while overseas, we didn't have an AC in the summer or a heater in the winter. At least here, I can just move rooms or adjust the AC/heater and be cool/warm again. I remind myself of the villages we heard about that lost so many people due to the extremely cold winter just two months before we arrived. At the newly-built university where we had Chinese classes, the rooms were concrete with cracked windows and doors. During the winter, we had on longjohns, three pairs of socks, coats, gloves, scarf, and hats in the classroom. So did all the other students. Luckily, we were able to leave after class and go back home where we could take a hot shower or plug up our space heater and get somewhat warm again. If the students wanted to take a hot shower, they had to go to another building before everyone else or the hot water would run out. The school wouldn't let them plug in ANYTHING in their rooms (due to electricity costs), so no space heaters of any kind.

I sometimes find myself wishing for a bigger house or just a house to call my own. We visited a school one time and looked at the teachers' housing. It was a concrete square cell. No bathroom (had to use the one outside facility where the students also used the bathroom), no kitchen, no AC/heater...just an old metal bunkbed. The windows were cracked, so it was freezing in the winter. And someone near my age, a new teacher just graduated, was working here because that is where she was "placed" -- it was not her choosing. Wow, another thing not to forget...freedom to choose where we want to work!

I complain about food, and I have to remind myself that I have so many choices here, and that if I don't like a certain meal, I'll get a better one later! At the deaf school we visited, for lunch, the students got the same meal everyday (rice and veggies) -- one bowl and nothing to drink. They were also forced to eat outside everyday (wind, rain, snow, it didn't matter) because someone had broken a chair in their "cafeteria" who knows how long ago. I also remind myself that our food is pretty clean and safe to eat, nothing that will make my husband drop 50 lbs again. I don't have to wash with bleach or soap every piece of vegetable or fruit I buy and I don't have to make sure every piece of food or utensil is completely dry of parasitic water. I remind myself of the joys of turning on the faucet and drinking tap water without fear of getting sick.

I don't want to forget, but living in America where we have grown up with so much more than we ever needed, it is so easy to forget. I have to remember my blessings daily:

- a house that is provided for us during this time
- the ability to be warm and cool
- being able to eat food and drink water without getting sick
- having family nearby and not counting down the months (or year!) to see them again
- having the freedom to choose our jobs, where we want to worship, where we want to live
- the freedom TO worship -- where we lived doesn't even compare to other countries where they have no freedom whatsoever in worship

I could go on and on, but my precious child is trying to wake up. If you actually read all of this, I'm impressed. I wrote it more for me than for you. I need to remind myself often of my blessings. I hope you do too.
